EVERY YEAR AT THE end of the Hajj, makeshift abbatoirs spring up along Jordan's major roads, and in nearly every open space in its cities and villages, as families celebrate the 'Eid Al Adha by ritually sacrificing a sheep and distributing meat to the poor.
In Amman, the municipality organized a dozen large sites where people could come to buy, sell and slaughter sheep in an orderly fashion. At one of these sites, in Khalda, near City Mall, there were close to 30 different sellers, and site director Samer Hadadeen estimated that 5,000 sheep will be slaughtered and sold there over the four days of the holiday.
